A Bridge to Elne is based on a true story of a courageous family who resisted the German occupation of France during WWII. Marcel Pointer was a successful dentist in Marseille until Nazi brutality led him to join the Maquis, the militant branch of the French Resistance.
After conducting several successful raids against the Germans, he was arrested by the Gestapo. After beating and interrogating him without obtaining evidence of his guilt, they finally released him. Aware of the increased danger, he decided to move his wife Angelina and their four children to Elne, a small village at the foot of the Pyrenees near the Mediterranean Sea. He returned to fight, leaving them with Paul and Elizabeth Courty, Angelina’s parents, and her sister Paulette.
In November 1942 the Germans moved their troops into the southern, unoccupied zone of France. Captain Johann Weller was sent to Elne with his German engineering battalion to build fortifications along the Mediterranean coast. Each family in the village was ordered to house a German officer. Johann was assigned to the Courty home. At first there was much tension, but with time Johann earned a degree of respect from the Courty’s. He was not the evil monster they had expected. He was cultured, kind, and considerate. That didn’t alter the fact that by participating in the occupation, he was helping to further the Nazi cause with all its evil.
Paulette, who spoke fluent German, came to know him well, and over time, they developed a close relationship. Only the taboos created by the war and occupation kept her from responding to his overtures. Paulette worked for the mayor of Elne. The Germans had made their headquarters at the mayor’s office, and thus, she was exposed to their conversations and plans. She was able to help the Resistance by funneling this information to Marcel. This was complicated by Johann’s interest, and she was unsure how much he could be trusted. When the German commandant began to suspect she was a spy, the entire family faced the prospect of execution. What happened next was something no one would have anticipated.
A BRIDGE TO ELNE; A FRENCH FAMILY'S STRUGGLE AGAINST THE NAZI OCCUPATION eBook L E INDIANER
The book is based on a real family. I know one of them. There are many things in the book that actually happened. However, it is mostly a work of fiction. It was obvious from the beginning that the author was probably from the U.S. It is his use of initials instead of a name. A French person would never do that. He also added a few years to some of the people.I haven't finished the book, but so far I am enjoying it very much.

A BRIDGE TO ELNE; A FRENCH FAMILY'S STRUGGLE AGAINST THE NAZI OCCUPATION eBook L E INDIANER Reviews
This could have been an interesting story, but the writing was banal.
Maybe there's good potential in the story but the prose is very stiff and hackneyed. Did nobody proofread the text? It is riddled with typos and misspellings. Not a professional product at all.
A good thriller! Events in the story were based on real situations. Liked the main characters! Highly recommend to readers who love WW II stories.
I purchased this for my husband, since the author was a classmate of his at SCO. My husband has been enjoying this book--he says it is very interesting. I'm waiting for my turn to read it!
Great story of one of the many French Resistance groups during WWII and the risks that were taken.
I am not always a big war book fan, but I really enjoyed this book, in spite of death and violence. Especially liked the fact that it is based on a true story; the book was first loaned to me by a friend who grew up in Nazi Germany. We traveled in the Elne area of France a few years ago, which also increased the relevance for me, and I bought my own copy to share with our friends in Barcelona. My book club will be reading the book this next fall so I just purchased more copies.
Interesting for historical facts but not very well-written from a literary standpoint. Very Americanized and unbelievable black and white characters
